Why do I need a Development Shell?

Summary

Development (Dev) shells allow you to build and maintain a course without losing access to it due to archiving.

Body

Development Shells allow you to build your courses and keep them current independently of the term in which the course is taught.

Unlike a "live" course shell, a Development (Dev) shell is not archived, it remains available to you year-round.

Students are not enrolled in a Dev shell. You have the ability to build, test, and remove content at any time without affecting the live shell environment in which you are teaching.

Keep your Development shell content current by re-setting it (deleting all the existing content) and importing your updated live shell content as part of your End-of-Term Course Wrap-Up.

Caution: Do Not Import Your Entire Live Course Without Re-setting the Development Shell First!

Failure to remove the previous old content before importing an update can result in course-file-quota overages, requiring manual deletion of all duplicated files.
