Microsoft Authenticator App Information

When downloading the Microsoft Authenticator app from your app store, make sure it is the official app from the Microsoft Corporation.  The first result in the results list is not always the official Microsoft Authenticator app.  The Microsoft Authenticator app is free and you never be asked to pay for it.  If the app you are attempting to download costs money, you have the wrong app!

The official app icon looks like this:

Do I need to keep the DUO app?

Once you have successfully migrated to Microsoft Authenticator, you will no longer need to use the DUO authenticator for any TAMUCT services.  However, that doesn't mean that you can automatically remove the DUO app/service from your mobile device.  See below for more detailed information.

Students:

  • If you use DUO for any personal accounts, such as banking, email, shopping sites, etc, do not delete the app from your phone/mobile device.  You can remove your TAMUCT account from the DUO app if you would like.
  • If you do not use DUO for any other accounts, you can remove the app from your mobile device.
  • If you are also employed by the University and have an employee NetID account as well, please see below.

What is multi-factor authentication?

  • According to the NIST, multi-factor authentication (MFA for short), is a security enhancement that allows you to present two pieces of evidence – your credentials – when logging in to an account.  Credentials are defined by three categories:

    • something you know (i.e. a password or pin),
    • something your have (i.e. a smart card),
    • something you are (i.e. fingerprints)
